Service Project: Matthew - "You never know what kind of an impact you will have on someone’s life"

One of the cool events I did for my history class for extra credit was going to a place called Veterans Village. At Veterans Village, I helped out people that don’t really have money or food by bringing them a dish of my custom made spaghetti and meatballs. When I was there, a couple of my fellow classmates and I helped brighten the people’s day by handing out food, soda, water, napkins, eating utensils, and plates. Sometimes we would even help them by taking food to their rooms for them even though we were told that we had to go with someone else too for safety reasons. Overall though, I think we all did something special during this time because we found ways to greet strangers who may be going through something difficult in their lives. Instead of ignoring the opportunity and making an excuse not to come, my classmates and I started conversations, lent a special ear, and made a difference in these people’s lives. Just because it didn’t seem like a big deal to us, they probably were overjoyed by the fact that someone who doesn’t even know them would make sure they had somewhat of a good night that day.

I feel like this event helped me use my core values in a cool way. When you are able to use your skills and values that you have in life to help people, it helps bring happiness and joy not only to you but the people around you. I also feel like using these skills is one of the things that helps make me an even better person. For example, instead of worrying about what I was going to eat or do that night, I made sure that other people in the world could have a great time, be around great people, and also have a decent home cooked meal.  One of my biggest core values and skills is making people happy and giving them great joy. I have a very kind heart and always have been able to find a way to put other people first before myself.  I also feel like everybody should be willing to lend a hand in someone’s life. I feel like giving someone joy through yourself is an awesome way to make someone’s day, because you never know what some one is going through at that time, or dealing with.

I feel like other people besides my classmates and I should find ways to contribute because even if it’s not for extra credit, it still helps accomplish something. Another big thing about this event is that it’s a great way to volunteer in the community and the city. You never know what kind of an impact you will have on someone’s life, because you don’t have to walk in their shoes every day and deal with the things they deal with. And also an important thing to think about is if you might want to try to work in areas like that in your life like becoming a social worker, or just volunteering and helping people. It might help you get a job someday having this on your resume.
