Aubrey Hepburn was right when she said; “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” Now that I am older, I see the impact of helping others, especially those that are less fortunate than me. I understand that not everyone is cut from the same cloth, and some people had to struggle more than others in life. As I grow older, I realize how important it is for someone to help if they are in position to do so.
For my service project, I gave the citizens of Veterans Village a bag filled with multiple common household items; A pillow and pillow case, slippers, Lysol spray, and a large bath towel. Though these do not seem like much of a contribution to someone who is in the middle class, and especially the upper class, these mean a lot to the people that it is going to.
The reason why I did it was selfish at first; I needed to pass my AMH 2010 class. However, now that I did it, I see how spending twenty-five dollars at Wal-Mart can make a world of difference to someone else. The sense of pride that I felt after leaving Dr. Soldani’s office, knowing that what I did would help someone else more than me, was an unbelievable feeling, and one that I would love to get again by helping others in the future.
Veterans Village is a community housing facility in Tallahassee, meant for veterans. The people that live there are homeless, and could use any help that they can get. To people in the middle class, such as myself, twenty-five dollars is not a lot. However, to the people that it is going towards, that same twenty-five dollars may mean the world.
Not only does this project give you a feeling of pride and happiness knowing that you are helping someone else, it can also give you a new perspective on life. People too often take for granted just how lucky they are. Look around at all the stuff you have. Bed sheets, a dresser, clothes, cologne; There are people who simply cannot afford the most basic of items like these. I used to take everything that I had for granted, up until this service project.

If you can, help someone else, especially those that struggle to help themselves. The sense of pride, and enjoyment knowing that you are helping someone, beats any other feeling in the world. Also, the new perspective on life that helping someone can offer, can make you become a much more humble person. Bit by bit, you can make this world a better place by helping others.
